Progress Report #7
5/11/12
I’m still painting and exploring this new painting technique. It’s basically trial and error. And I feel as though I’ve been making a lot of errors. This relates to my project proposal because my proposal is very loose. I am able to paint for the rest of the year. I have learned to work in an unfamiliar style. It’s new and fresh, and I’m having a lot of fun exploring this. I have faced several challenges such as drips, bad color combinations, and composition fail, but it’s ok that’s all a part of the process. My next step is to continue this style until the end of the year, or something.

I continue to paint in this new technique. This relates to my project proposal because my proposal is very broad. I’m pretty much just going to paint for a while.. It’s fun to explore and discover, and I’m having a lot of fun painting this style. I have faced several challenges such as drips, but I’ll get over it. My next step is to continue this style.

I have continued to paint pictures in a new style. Similar to that of the book that made called Horse Factory. It relates to my project proposal because I have just recently gone through a breakthrough in my paintings. I have been working with new paints and new brushes. Have learned to create characters out of my abstractions rather than painting an abstraction around a figure. My next step is to continue painting and create a few sculptures for the art show, Though that is another project proposal for another time.

3/16/12
I just recently finished my book. I call it “Horse Factory.” It is a book that has some words but it was made to be read visually. The only thing that is different from my project proposal because in my proposal, I talked about maybe basing the story off of a poem. I decided against that idea as I began to work. I have learned to break free of my normal means of painting. My characters and figures have become far more abstract than ever before. What I have learned from this project is the exact same thing that challenges me. Maybe I should make another book.

I finished my portraits and they turned out great. I am very pleased with this study. I was able to make the models recognizable without making them too realistic. I wanted to keep a cartoon aspect to the work. I have learned to paint people. And the challenges I faced were composing them in the display case. The next step is to display them and see what the public thinks of them.

2/17/12
I have continued to paint portraits of my friends and teachers. It’s a fun project and it has been challenging. I have learned to paint people more accurately than before, and the problems I have faced were trying to replicate the person accurately enough so that they could be recognized. My next step is to finish the series and display them in an installation.

I have been painting portraits of people I know. Friends, family, but more importantly my peers in the art room. Portraits are something that I have not spent much time on. I’m learning that paintings portraits are harder than expected. I have never been good a replicating objects, replicating humans is something else. I’m getting better though I can’t make them look actually like humans but in my quirky, cartoon, style I am able to make them look somewhat human. My next step is to progress. I will eventually get the hang of this and move further out of my comfort zone.

I am just coming to an end to my latest series. What I am doing relates to my project proposal because have just been working in this series for such a long time. Probably since early November, even late October. I have learned many resourceful skills and techniques. Such as how to properly use a putty knife, certain complimentary color schemes, and composition between characters. However I did face challenges learning these techniques and skills. Suppose my next step would be to move on; develop new characters and new abstractions.

I have continued to paint in my natural style and I am happy to say that I have gotten through the rut I discussed in my last report. I glad that I was able to fix the problem that occurred. I have learned a lot about my work and my process without being able to conjure up a formula. Developed a style is defining your work but creating a formula is not such a good thing because then you’re kind of just running around in circles. My next step is to officially finish the series I have been working in and to start something new without forgetting what I have learned.
Progress Report #6
12/2/11
I have continued to paint in the familiar style that I have been painting in for the past few months. Although I feel as though I have progressed since the beginning of the year I feel like I have hit some kind of stalemate. To further progress I need to challenge myself and I have become far too comfortable in this style. I have learned a lot about abstraction and space. The challenges I face are development of new characters. My next step is to figure out how I can take my paintings to the next level.
Progress Report #5
11/11/11
I have been trying to challenge myself with my own techniques and style. This relates to my proposal because that’s exactly what I planned to do in my proposal. I have learned much about my abstractions, composition, and my imagination. I have faced challenges with managing space and color schemes. My next step is to continue this project and to further develop my abstractions.

10/28/11 (my birthday)
Currently I have just been trying to become more comfortable with my own style. Essentially I have been working sub-consciously, trying to find my own narratives and ideas. Mostly I have been painting events and stories that have happen in my life. I have learned to use a putty knife to the best of my ability and I have faced challenges such as the composition between my characters and abstractions. The next step to continue to paint until I feel satisfied then create another project proposal and start the next project.

I just recently finished a series of abstract expressionistic paintings. I have been aware of the color field I have been working in and I have been experimenting with new methods such as a paint scraper. The scraper leaves a smooth yet layered texture that exposes various colors of the layers before. It relates to my project proposal because I have not strayed too far from the idea, the only thing that has changed is the quantity of the pieces. I have learned a few things from this series, such as a new technique with the scraper and a better sense of abstraction. The only challenge I faced was the drips. God how I dread the drips. I want to apply my abstractions to my paintings with characters.

9/30/11
I am just about finished with my idea that was discusses in my project proposal. I have continued to paint over ten paintings of recreated paintings of art history. I have learned a better sense of composition, new narratives, and new characters to play around with. The challenges I faced are the same things that I have learned. With this series to learn is to be challenged. My next step is to complete the series then start a new project with my own style and original paintings.

I have been taking famous paintings from art history and recreating them in my own style. The series relates to my project proposal because as I recreate the painting I receive a better understanding of composition, understand and replicate how the professionals do it. I have learned to create a landscape, to fill the void, and to not make the composition between characters so vague. The knowledge I have gained and the challenges I face are one in the same. My next step is to continue the series until I feel as though I am finished.
